Setting up this painting, I thought of a city skyline. Some of the vases extended up, towering above the others. The shadow of some cast a shadow on to those behind them.
I started with large, broad strokes for this painting. After blocking in the initial big shapes, I used a rag and my fingers to push the pastel into my sandpaper surface. Then, I went back over the top of the block-in and used strokes of color, laid one on top of or next to the others to create form and a sense of light.
