Vessels

Setting up this painting, I was thinking of a city skyline. The tops of the vases extended up, towering above their neighbors. The shadow of one cast a shadow on those behind them affecting the view of the imaginary people living inside these glass and ceramic forms.

This painting started with large, broad strokes of color. After blocking in the initial big shapes, I used a rag and my fingers to push the pastel into my sandpaper surface. Then, I went back over the top of the block-in and used strokes of color, laid one on top of or next to the others to create form and a sense of light.
