Pastel Field

Still more longing for spring…  Here in Minnesota, we have had a few days with above normal temperatures.  Then, things dipped back down into the single digits. This little painting was done a hand made pastel panel.  I started with a piece of Masonite.  I prepped it with 2 layers of acrylic gesso.  Then, I painted the surface the bright orange liquid …

Pastel Pines

Pastel Pines | Jeffrey Smith

When I woke up this morning, it was 10 degrees below zero.  I decided that I couldn’t dwell on how cold it was since I was nice and warm in my studio.  Instead, decided to focus on the summer yet to come with this little pastel color study.

Pine Trio

Jeffrey Smith | Pine Trio | pastel

The painting above began life quite a bit different from how it looks today.  I painted it in the summer of 2006.  It is painted on a Gatorboard panel  that was prepped with an under-painting of magenta liquid acrylic and a layer of pumice gel, both from Golden. I took this painting all the way …

Interstate State Park

This painting is from a spot high up top of the cliffs over looking the St.Croix River.  The river forms the border between Minnesota and Wisconsin.  This particular spot is on the Minnesota side of the river just south of the town of Taylors Falls.  It was a wonderful autumn day with a bright, yet overcast sky.

The Temperance River

The Temperance River, 12×12 This is the first time I have ever painted a waterfall.  It was such a great early fall day when we were on the rocks over looking the upper falls on the Temperance River, near Lake Superior.  One of the most fascinating things about paint this piece, was attempting to capture the feeling …

Birch Forest

Welcome to the Birch Forest! Today’s post is a oil painting sketch that I’m planning on enlarging into a bigger painting. I just finished making a batch of new panels, and have been anxious to try this long, narrow shape.  I think the birch trees in mass lend themselves quite nicely to this format. The inspiration for …
