Interstate State Park

This painting is from a spot high up top of the cliffs over looking the St.Croix River.  The river forms the border between Minnesota and Wisconsin.  This particular spot is on the Minnesota side of the river just south of the town of Taylors Falls.  It was a wonderful autumn day with a bright, yet overcast sky.

The Temperance River

The Temperance River, 12×12 This is the first time I have ever painted a waterfall.  It was such a great early fall day when we were on the rocks over looking the upper falls on the Temperance River, near Lake Superior.  One of the most fascinating things about paint this piece, was attempting to capture the feeling …

Birch Forest

Welcome to the Birch Forest! Today’s post is a oil painting sketch that I’m planning on enlarging into a bigger painting. I just finished making a batch of new panels, and have been anxious to try this long, narrow shape.  I think the birch trees in mass lend themselves quite nicely to this format. The inspiration for …

Sunny Pastures

I’ve painted this field about a dozen times now.  I think this is one of my favorites.  Some days, the paint just feels great coming off of the brush.  This piece was also done on one of my home made or studio made panels.

Plein Air, Bloomington

Another day of painting outside! Minnesota served up another gorgeous day today, and I was able to take advantage of this blue sky morning by getting a second session in on the landscape above.  After the light had shifted, I set up for my second go of the morning; a quick oil sketch of …

2015 Summit Ave

Today was another beautiful day, so I found my self painting outside again.  I didn’t have to travel to  far from my own house today.  In Minnesota, or most anywhere, Summit Ave is a truely one of a kind street with big homes everywhere you turn.  Subject wise, this was kind of different choice for me, but I …

Plein Air sketches

I finally made it back to the studio today.  I’m with out air conditioning, and it was really hot again today in Minneapolis.  I decided to grab my brushes, and head out to do some plein air work.  Today is a double post.  The first one, Stream, took about an hour and a half, and …
