Roxanne
This portrait started as a demo for a pastel workshop that I was teaching. I wanted to show how you can achieve the feeling of light hitting the model and a likeness by having a huge set of pastels. I worked with a couple of sticks of vine charcoal and a set of 40 half-stick pastels from Sennelier. I sketch the portrait with charcoal establishing placement and likeness. I then toned all of the shadow areas with a light layer of charcoal. For the lights, I blocked in my shape with flat color adding to it as I have broken down the light shape into smaller shapes and colors.
