Two Sunflowers $300.00 + $10s&h oil on linen panel by Jeffrey Smith What ever I’m focused on in my artistic world, it is always nice to take a break from it. Long months of Minnesota winter, means lots of time working in the studio. For the summer months, I take my studio on the road. [...]
Still life
Light from above is just plain cool! When I was a student at The Atelier, I was fascinated with the effect that light from the skylight in the main drawing room had on the form of whatever we were drawing. Nuances were much more pronounced. You could really see the fullness of a curve. Things [...]
I remember how much I loved sunflowers when I was a kid. We had a patch of them growing alongside the house, next to the kitchen window. As I recall, the height of those sunflowers was pretty incredible especially to a kid of 7 or 8 year. These sunflowers were painted from life right in my own [...]
Plein Air Sunflowers $250.00 Please click here to check out Jeffrey Smith Art on Etsy for purchase information. I painted the above still life on a sunny Sunday in my back yard. I love the idea of taking a still life outside. The colors are so much more intense, and I think flowers look fantastic [...]
Sunflower Bouquet, Cloudy Day $150.00 Free Shipping in the US Sunflowers are my favorite flowers. I love them, I do. This painting may seem a bit oxymoronic, sunflowers on cloudy day. The great part about painting on an bright overcast day, is the quality of the light. There is a softness, but the color of [...]
Peonies and Pewter Vase $200.00 Free Shipping I think peonies are one of the greatest things about spring. Every year, I look forward to painting these big, beautiful flowers. The painting above is my first of the season. I moved into a new house in February. The cool thing, has been watching the gardens as [...]
I have been out exploring the world the last few weeks, armed only with my pochade box and paints. Today, however, I returned to the studio to complete the above floral painting that will be part of a live auction to benefit a local school. This will mark my second year working with the organization. Prior to last year’s [...]
Flowers and Pears is done! I am quite happy with how this painting ended up. From a distance, this still life feels very tight, very detailed. When you get close to it, there is a lot of broken color, strokes of colors placed next to one another on the surface and left unmixed allowing your [...]
The image above is a work in progress shot of the still life that I’ve been working on in my studio. In setting up this painting, my plan was to create an arrangement that would allow me to really push some of the visual textures. We have the rough wood of my studio table, the glass pitcher, [...]
I had a great time in the studio working on this little painting. I do love painting glass. Working on this balsamic vinegar bottle has kept that love of glass alive! The vinegar in the bottle had some wonderful colors when seen under the north light coming in my studio windows.
