I remember how much I loved sunflowers when I was a kid.  We had a patch of them growing alongside the house, next to the kitchen window.  As I recall, the height of those sunflowers was pretty incredible especially to a kid of 7 or 8 year.
These  sunflowers were painted from life right in my own backyard. [...]

Sunflowers are my favorite flowers.  I love them, I do.  This painting may seem a bit oxymoronic, sunflowers on cloudy day.  The great part about painting on an bright overcast day, is the quality of the light.  There is a softness, but the color of everything is [...]

I think peonies are one of the greatest things about spring.  Every year, I look forward to painting these big, beautiful flowers.  The painting above is my first of the season.  I moved into a new house in February.  The cool thing, has been watching the gardens as plants are comingup.  You [...]

Ranunculus and Apples| Still Life Painting on a Mission

May 14, 2009

I have been out exploring the world the last few weeks, armed only with my pochade box and paints.  Today, however, I returned to the studio to complete the above floral painting that will be part of a live auction to benefit a local school.
This will mark my second year working with the organization.  Prior to last year’s event, [...]

Flowers and Pears, One Final Look at an Oil Still Life Painitng

Thumbnail image for Flowers and Pears, One Final Look at an Oil Still Life Painitng April 28, 2009

Flowers and Pears  is done!   I am quite happy with how this painting ended up.  From a distance, this still life feels very tight, very detailed. When you get close to it, there is a lot of broken color, strokes of colors placed next to one another on the surface and left unmixed allowing your [...]

Pears and Flowers, work in progress.

April 25, 2009

The image above is a work in progress shot of the still life that I’ve been working on in my studio.  In setting up this painting, my plan was to create an arrangement that would allow me to really push some of the visual textures.  We have the rough wood of my studio table, the glass pitcher, [...]

Balsamic and Blue Bowl

March 30, 2009

I had a great time in the studio working on this little painting.  I do love painting glass.  Working on this balsamic vinegar bottle has kept that love of glass alive!   The vinegar in the bottle had some wonderful colors when seen under the north light coming in my studio windows.

Tea Party

March 18, 2009

In an effort to push for some new ideas for still life, I decided to try an unusual perspective for this piece, and an unusual format.
I set up this still life on my large studio table, and stood so I was looking down at the grouping. I love being able to see in side of [...]

Green Tea Kettle

March 14, 2009

I loved this tea kettle when I saw it at the store.  This particular shade of green is so me…
With this set up, I’m using a different perspective than I normally do.  I positioned the objects on my studio table which is much lower than the still life stand that I usually work from.
