Balsamic and Blue Bowl

March 30, 2009

I had a great time in the studio working on this little painting.  I do love painting glass.  Working on this balsamic vinegar bottle has kept that love of glass alive!   The vinegar in the bottle had some wonderful colors when seen under the north light coming in my studio windows.

Tea Party

March 18, 2009

In an effort to push for some new ideas for still life, I decided to try an unusual perspective for this piece, and an unusual format.
I set up this still life on my large studio table, and stood so I was looking down at the grouping. I love being able to see in side of [...]

Green Tea Kettle

March 14, 2009

I loved this tea kettle when I saw it at the store.  This particular shade of green is so me…
With this set up, I’m using a different perspective than I normally do.  I positioned the objects on my studio table which is much lower than the still life stand that I usually work from.

Orange and Blue, Potted Begonia

February 15, 2009

I had the best time painting this one. Hands down….the most fun I’ve had the easel in a long time!  I’m not sure what it was about this set up.  Perhaps  it made me think about spring.  Winter can get a little long here in Minnesota. Or maybe it was the blue and orange color combination;  [...]

This was a quick painting.  In addition to pushing to my artistic abilities for brushwork, speed has emerged as one of my artistic development goals on 2009.
As anyone who is familiar with the atelier method of  instruction can attest, it tends to be very methodical, but also very slow.  My [...]

Yellow Roses and Swedish Tapestry

January 27, 2009

Upon arriving at the studio, I opened up the cabinet that holds all [...]

I had such a great time painting this little silver bowl on Sunday, I decided to paint it again.
I think what draws me to painting the silver bowl against a light background, is all of the lost edges.  That means that there isn’t a lot of contrast between the object [...]

January 18, 2009

Today’s painting is another look at the stargazer lily. This time, I placed it against a light background.  It is interesting to note how refreshing it feels to paint the same subject against two very different background.  I also pulled my easel way back for this little painting.  I’m very [...]

I was amazed by the amount of fragrance that one lone lilly produced in my studio today.  The cold snap here in Minnesota has finally lifted. Today was seemed almost tropical at 20 degrees  after living below zero for the last couple of days.

It truly is a wonderful time to be alive when I can be painting fresh tulips in my Minneapolis, Minnesota studio during the coldest stretch of weather that we have had in 5 years.  Today, the high temperature is expected to stay below zero.  The blue and white [...]
